Medical Incarceration

Nursing homes are often ill-equipped to deal with the unique care needs of patients with dementia leading to overuse/misuse of anti-psychotic drugs as a way of sedating the patients while the disease slowly takes its toll on the patient.

Many of us who have lost a loved one to end-stage dementia want the option to predetermine a point at time when we believe our loss of quality of life and/or dignity will have deteriorated enough to proceed with medically assisted ending of life. This can be achieved by expanding current law and allowing advance directives that accommodate a person's wishes if they should be diagnosed with dementia.
